Why We’re Committing Our Lives to Ministry in Costa Rica
Understand the issue. Explore practical steps. Find your place in the mission.
For three years, Costa Rica has been part of our lives through ministry, relationships, and a growing sense of calling. What began with visits and conversations has become a commitment that is changing the course of our lives.
We are Tim and Beverly Cannady, the people behind Divergent Life. We have sold our business and are preparing to make Costa Rica our home so we can give ourselves more fully to the work God has placed before us.
The destination we are working toward is bigger than a move. It is a future in which men, women, and children affected by exploitation and trafficking can experience hope, build real opportunities, and move toward freedom.
A calling shaped over years
Our commitment to Costa Rica sits within a much longer journey of faith and ministry. God has been preparing our hearts over the years. During the past three years of involvement in Costa Rica, that calling has taken a clearer direction through the relationships we have built.
Short-term trips gave us opportunities to meet people and begin those relationships. Staying connected between visits helped those relationships continue. Over time, the question became how we could give more of our lives to walking alongside people whose needs extend far beyond a single visit.
That is the commitment behind Divergent Life. We want to be present, listen closely, and keep showing up.
Why relationships come first
When we talk about exploitation and trafficking, we are talking about people. A person’s life is larger than what has happened to them. Their hopes, abilities, family, and future matter.
Our approach begins with listening and building trust. Practical help grows from understanding the person in front of us: what they need, what they hope for, and what could help them take a meaningful next step.
Mentoring, education, and practical skills can open doors to opportunity. Encouragement and discipleship can help someone keep moving when the process is difficult. We want to walk with people as they build toward a different future.
The decision to commit fully
Selling our business was a concrete step toward this calling. Preparing to make Costa Rica our home means changing our daily lives so we can give more time and attention to the relationships and work that have brought us here.
We do not see that decision as the end of our story. It is the next step in learning to trust God and respond with obedience. Our work, experience, and willingness to serve all have a place in what comes next.
Our mission is to bring hope, opportunity, and freedom to men, women, and children affected by exploitation and trafficking through the transforming power of love. Explore the mission behind Divergent Life.
How your mission team can be part of the story
For churches and groups considering a Costa Rica mission trip, we want your time here to connect with something that continues beyond your visit. Your team can bring practical skills, encouragement, prayer, and a willingness to build relationships.
Teaching, children’s ministry, meal outreach, and community prayer are ways teams can serve. We plan around your team’s strengths and the community’s needs, helping you prepare for a visit with purpose.
A meaningful trip begins before you board a plane. It begins with a conversation about who is coming, what they can offer, and how they hope to serve. Our Costa Rica Mission Trips page explains the opportunities and how to begin planning. You can also read our church and youth mission-trip planning guide.
